What does GSOH mean?
Maybe it means Good Score On Hubpages
Some years ago, as students, my pal and I went to rent a room each in a house share with 4 women, we had a look around (especially at our prospective house-mates) and decided it was fine – clean and tidy but basic, however my friend said with reservation “I’m not sure…in the ad, they asked for a GSOH and I don’t think I can live up to that…” I quizzed him and it turned out he thought it meant a ‘good standard of housekeeping’. By then I knew gsoh to be an abbreviation for 'good sense of humour' and duly enlightened him. However, for a while I had always believed it meant good standard of oral hygiene! (This misconception, however, stood me in good stead for years!).
I first came across ‘must have GSOH’ when as a young teenager I curiously and secretively studied dating ads posted by women in my Father’s newspaper, well not just in his copy. Hoards of women saying “GSOH essential, must have GSOH, WLTM man with GSOH, only those with GSOH need reply” – it seemed to me then that if a man had this, liked beach walks and meals out, my love life (more likely ‘sex life’ then) would be well-sorted. What struck me most about the adverts placed by men was their continued emphasis on them having a ‘Good Salary Own Home’, as if this was their interpretation of GSOH, the man, the provider image.

Why Women Love Men with a Good Sense of Humour
Women's brains appear to be quite different to men's in responses to humour, with women more likely to activate - with greater intensity - the part of the brain that generates rewarding feelings in response to new experiences.
Researchers, from the Stanford University School of Medicine, used functional magnetic resonance imaging to monitor the brains of male and female subjects while watching humorous videos. Previous studies have shown gender differences in the use and appreciation of humour and the meaning and function of laughter, but no previous research has examined sex-specific differences in the brain's response to humour.
The study, concluded that men and women share much of the same humour-response system, but they also found that some brain regions were activated more in women. These included the left prefrontal cortex, suggesting a greater emphasis on language and executive processing in women, and the nucleus accumbens, which is part of the brain's reward centre.
So it's official: all women have a GSOH; therefore it follows that they want to be around men who can satisfy their desire to laugh.
A few days ago, holding my wife close to my chest, I told her that what everyone needed to feel loved was 10 hugs a day (I had been reading a book about the languages of love) Rachel looked up and said "10 hubs?" We really laughed and the bed rocked!

Health Benefits of a GSOH - Laughter and Your Health
A GSOH has got to be up there rated very high along with chocolate and sex. Humour is infectious. The sound of heartfelt laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniff, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it unites people together and increases happiness and intimacy. In addition to the domino effect of joy and amusement, laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humour and laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your energy, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use. Laughter is strong medicine for mind and body. Laughter is the "Best Medicine" for Your Heart too. Can a laugh every day keep the heart attack away? Maybe so, laughter, along with an active sense of humour, may help protect you against a heart attack, according to a recent study by cardiologists at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore.
Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert.
With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health.
Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.
This past week my family have nick-named me 'Jamie House-hubber' - at least I have a new identity, other than 'Dad' and 'husband'. My daughter (7) has accused me of viewing porn - thanks to a certain lady's recent hubpage publications this past week about underwear (who will remain nameless) and I'm sure this hub is in danger of an X rating, if not closure.

If you could bottle the scent of 'GSOH' it would be desired by women the world over, requiring no translation. Perhaps it would be called 'GOSH' by Hugo Boss - you can almost see someone like actor Hugh Grant promoting it!
Everyone benefits from laughing, whether at work or play it lightens the day, lifting you up.

I love this hub. Just goes to show the smallest things in life really take effect in a relationship. I mean I consider myself a pretty funny guy. I have been with my girlfriend for almost a year now and it's been great. Thanks for your hub. If you might, do you think you are able to come up with a hub about female and insecurities? Because if you do that would be great! Thanks. -sircasket
Man, you are funny ... :-))))
Well if this says anything my daughters b/f (fart video) came in sat down then said "Are those actual tears?" I was laughing so hard all I could do was nod! The newspaper ads had me rolling! I read them all, squinting, THEN realized I could click on them to make them bigger!
I still have the remnants of tears on my face!! What a good way to start my day!
Thanks!
My husband has a GSOH ,always telling jokes.I have a friend who has got what could be called a quiet sense of humour, and boy can he make me smile !!

you have GSOH (Great Sense of Hubbing)
GSOH is vital! Thank you for a very witty article. I enjoyed it immensely.
Dearest Jamie:
GSOH you have, and you truly display it well. GREAT Hub. Very enjoyable, and quite frankly, I needed time out to laugh a little, and remember that my hubbie has GSOH too. Thanks much for sharing!
Jamie, I SO laughed at this article! Super funny, I'm sure you have no probs with the ladies! I'm also sure I'll be guffawin' like a mad Buffoon for the rest of the day as I recall this hub!
Great Hub Jamie..Made me laugh...My Hubby has a GSOH ,always telling Jokes, he is a gents hairdresser so comes home with a new one most days that a customer has told him.
Laughter is definately good medicine...and to see a smile light up a special persons face a joy beyond compare.
I totally agree that having a man with GSOH is very important.
LOL, very good hub! I like the play on words with the acronym, so I'm giving you a thumbs ups in order for you to keep a GOSH. :)
Very fun read, enjoyed this very much and sharing with friends! Thank you for the laughs!
Not only is a good sense of humor important, but a woman's laughter in response as well. The first joke I ever told my wife could have been a deal breaker, but she laughed. She was sold and so was I.
The joke in question?
A woman goes to her husband and says, "I'd like to have bigger breasts, but I don't want to go through having surgery and all that. Any ideas?"
The man thinks a moment, then asks, "Have you tried rubbing toilet paper between them?"
She looks puzzled. "What makes you think that would work?"
"I don't know," the husband says. "But it worked great on your ass over the years."
YES, she still kept me. :) Like I said. It was a risky one. But she still kept me. lol
Great hub BTW. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I am so glad you wrote this hub--I had no clue what GSOH meant, lol...
Not an hour goes by in our house where there isn't laughter...so I can completely relate to what you are saying!
I loved the "Good Standard of Oral Hygiene", though...hilarious. :)
Thanks for the laughs--I really enjoyed this hub!
Tammy
Hi Jamie
One thing's certain, you've got a GSOH. I look forward to reading more of this. As a man in a woman's world it will be interesting to see your perspective on things. When I took time off work to look after my young son I found it very strange that my own identity seemed to disappear. I became my husband's wife and my son's mother rather than just me. Now with Hubpages I've found I've got another identity that is just me. Amber:)
Very good hub! GSOH is certainly important in "relationships." Over the long term, talking and GSOH sustain the romance - either that or money and sex. Ha! Later!
Excellent hub. Thanks for an early morning laugh. GSOH is important in every relationship.
Namaste.
Welcome to Hubpages. What a great start. This is really enjoyable. Should be GREAT Sense Of Humor.
Great Hub, certainly raised a smile in our house!
What a great entertaining and informative hub! I totally agree, humor is so infectious- who can resist at the very least smiling when hearing the sound of laughter? Loved the video...I really did laugh out loud watching that! =)
very nice hub hehe, I like men with GSOH too, one who can make me not only smile but laugh hehe, I like humor that is why! Now, i will go nd find myself one, hehe, Thank you, good one, Maita
Delightful hub! Reeking with both humor and good information!
I actually tell people my number one reason for being with my husband is his good sense of humor. He makes me laugh. He doesn't get upset instead prefers to pick on me when I do something he doesn't like. Like the fact that I never remember to pick up my clothes off the bathroom floor. He can't stand this, but he is able to just relax and laugh about it, instead of screaming and yelling as I hear some men do over their pet peeves. I always joke that to put up with me, you have to have a good sense of humor, but the truth is probably, for me to put up with you, you have to have a good sense of humor.
GSOH I must have. Laughed like a drain most of the way through this one!
Thanks for the giggles and guffaws!
Love and peace
Tony
Good one! You made me laugh :-))
So nice to meet you, GSOH! - I mean, Jamie! Welcome to Hub Pages!
Another great hub Jamie, not only funny but true as well.
A great sense of Humour is a necessary tool of life as well as love and seeing a woman's face light up in a smile at something you have said or done is one of life's great pleasures.
This is so good, not being a native English speaker I am always puzzled with when I see things like GSOH. I was laughing so loud that my little ones were starting to look weird at me...
This hub made me laugh out loud! Shows GSOH,Good for you Jamie.(Sorry about your daughter!!)
I really enjoyed this hub; you made me laugh out loud which is a really good thing to be able to do. I loved your GSOH it shone out from the page; I look forward to reading more of your hubs in the future. You are right about laughter being contagious, that wedding video had me in fits.
hahah, GSOH! Your play upon words was refreshing, and information intriguing. Great hub!
Excellent! My husband had GSOH and could make me laugh like no other.
